Cops rescue van driver from abduction and hijack bid

IPOH - A van driver escaped from being abducted by three men while on his usual rounds to distribute cigarettes along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said the 49-year-old victim was processing an order when the suspects threatened him with a knife and snatched the keys to his van.

They then shoved him into the van before attempting to drive off during the 10.15am incident on Thursday, he said.

"Fortunately for the victim, officers in a police patrol unit happened to witness the incident which took place in front of a restaurant.

"The suspects panicked and took off on foot at the sight of the three policemen," ACP Sum said here yesterday.

He said the policemen caught one of the suspects, a 30-year-old man from Kelantan with previous convictions for drug possession and robbery.

The suspect had been released from prison two months ago would be remanded until tomorrow for investigations.

"With the arrest, we have solved four other similar cases which had taken place in Bercham, Tanjung Rambutan and Chemor in the last two months," he said.
