For days, neighbours wondered why there was a stench
The man lived in the unit (white gate) that was just one door away from the lift landing. His immediate neighbours didn't notice anything amiss until they saw the police at his door yesterday.

For nearly a week, a stench hit her whenever she walked past the eight-storey lift lobby of her block in the Outram area.

But she did not give much thought to it as she assumed it was just a dead rat.

On Monday, Madam Jenifer, 56, a housewife, found out that the stench was because her neighbour had died.

The 55-year-old man was found dead in his one-room flat at the Jalan Minyak block.

Madam Jenifer said that the man, whom she knew only as "abang" (brother in Malay), had lived in the unit one door away from the lift landing for 10 years.

She has lived there for more than 20 years and had been friends with the man since he moved in.

They used to talk and smoke in the corridor.

She added that the man had worked as a cleaner here and had lived alone in the rented flat because his wife and 12-year-old daughter are in Indonesia.

"He was a very friendly and nice man. We talked frequently and his wife came to visit him sometimes," said Madam Jenifer.

She found out that her "abang" had died when she saw police officers at his flat.
