Dead worker was sole breadwinner in family

The Indian worker Sakthivel Kumaravelu, who died in an accident in Little India on Dec 8, was the only breadwinner in his family. The 33-year-old is survived by his mother Rajalakshmi, 53, and younger brother Ramesh, 25. He was from the village of Chattiram, 400km from Chennai. He came to Singapore three years ago to help support his family.

This tragedy was the latest of many that have befallen the family.

Mr Sakthivel's father died five years ago from an illness. His brother Ramesh, who was working as a driver, met with an accident which left him with a brain injury. He was unable to work after the incident.

Three months ago, Mr Sakthivel's sister Maheshwari, 22, died in her in-laws' house in the neighbouring state of Kerala. Her case is still under investigation.

After Mr Sakthivel's death, the family has no means of earning any livelihood. His mother hasn't been able to control her tears while both the brother and mother have not been able to eat anything since the news of Mr Sakthivel's death reached them.
