SINGAPORE - The Government understands the community's views on the Muslim headscarf, or hijab, at the workplace, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean yesterday.
"But the Government also has the responsibility to balance all these different community requirements, and keep in mind what we need to maintain overall social harmony," the Minister for Home Affairs added in a statement.
Mr Teo said that when a community presses for its own concerns, it must "bear in mind how that affects other communities and how others might see it".
