KUALA LUMPUR - It was an experiment gone wrong for a group of greenhorn drug dealers when their attempt at processing syabu on the 21st floor of Midfields Condominium in Taman Sungai Besi went awry.
City narcotics CID chief Asst Comm Wan Abdullah Ishak said fire-fighters from the Bandar Tun Razak fire and rescue station arrived at the scene yesterday after receiving a distress call from someone who noticed smoke coming from the unit.
"Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered that it was smoke, not fire, that triggered the alarm.
"They opened the windows to clear the smoke and noticed the presence of drug paraphernalia in the condo unit," he added.
ACP Wan Abdullah said a group comprising between three and five local men had tried to process syabu in the unit.
It was this failed experiment that brought about the huge cloud of smoke, he explained.
"We suspect that the men were new to the business and were inexperienced in drug processing.
"We have identified two to three suspects after reviewing closed circuit television footage," he added.
"They have been renting the unit for about two to three weeks and the access card was registered under one of them.
"Upon inspection of the site, we also discovered that the equipment used in the experiment was incomplete," he explained.
ACP Wan Abdullah added that a police forensics team was in the midst of ascertaining the exact amount of drugs that were in the unit.
The men were said to have taken some of the drugs with them while fleeing the condominium.
