JOHOR BARU - A single mother and her unemployed boyfriend have pleaded not guilty to two counts of abusing her three-year-old daughter.
Factory operator Katrina Kamilah Kamarudin, 29, and Hishamuddin Ismail, 31, were first brought to a Sessions Court here to face the charge of physically abusing the girl by hitting her with a stick.
The child, who suffered serious injuries to her eyes, a tear on her left ear, a bruised neck, a bleeding arm and missing fingernails, was brought to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.
Further medical examination confirmed that she had also sustained serious injuries to her private parts.
The couple was accused of having committed the offence at a house in Jalan Denai Utama near Kempas Utama here at around 6.45pm on Dec 26.
They face a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine or whipping under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
Both Katrina and Hishamuddin claimed trial in front of Sessions judge Mohamad Haldar Abdul Aziz who did not offer bail. He also set Jan 27 for mention.
For the second charge, the couple was accused at a magistrate's court here of abusing the girl under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2011 at the same time and place.
Both the accused pleaded not guilty in front of magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias to the offence, which carries a RM20,000 fine, a 10-year jail term or both.
Hishamuddin also claimed trial to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code for threatening the girl's grandmother, Rohani Abdullah, 56, at the same time and place.
Mohd Azlan, who did not grant bail, set Feb 2 for mention.
Deputy Public Prosecutors Khazrin Hafiz Khalil and Noor Farhana Adham prosecuted the case while the couple was not represented.
