TAIPEI - An elderly man yesterday attempted suicide after stabbing his wife who had been suffering from cancer as he was unwilling to see her suffer anymore, said police in Tamsui.
Surnamed Ku, the 83-year-old man visited his wife in Mackay Memorial Hospital in Tamsui yesterday afternoon. Patients sharing the ward saw him suddenly stabbing his wife with a fruit knife. After receiving over 10 thrusts with the weapon, the 65-year-old died before paramedics could reach her. Ku was rushed to an emergency room as he had stabbed himself in the stomach in an attempt to end his own life. After emergency treatment, Ku was reported to be conscious by the time prosecutors arrived at the hospital.
Ku's wife had been bedridden for a long time after being diagnosed with brain cancer.
According to prosecutors, Ku was able to express himself clearly despite being frail after stabbing himself. He stated that he found it unbearable to see his wife suffering in the hospital for a long time, and wished to die along with her.
Ku was granted bail of NT$100,000 ($4,200) after admitting to his actions and will be taken care of by his family, said prosecutors.
