MSF to investigate alleged abuse of elderly woman

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) is looking into an incident where an elderly woman was slapped by a younger lady.

The alleged abuse was caught on camera showing the frail-looking woman sweeping the corridor of an HDB apartment unit at 48 Lower Delta Road.

While the elderly lady was sweeping the floor under the watchful eyes of two other women, she was suddenly slapped by one of the ladies. As she struggled to regain her composure, the younger lady delivered another slap to the elderly woman, who is believed to be her mother.

ApohTecky Numero, who uploaded the video on Monday (July 20) at 7.42pm, said that the elderly lady had bruises on her face each time he saw her.

He added that the alleged abuse has been taking place for awhile.

The video has been widely circulated on Facebook with over 436,000 views and 23,000 shares.

An irate Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin weighed in on the incident, saying that MSF will follow up and make sure that the elderly lady is protected.

"Whatever the context and reasons, I can't see how this is justifiable," Minister Tan wrote. "Hitting an old lady like this?"
