SINGAPORE - Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has comfirmed that he will be standing in Marine Parade GRC in the next General Election.
Mr Goh has been a Member of Parliament for Marine Parade for close to 40 years. Channel NewsAsia reported that Mr Goh was first fielded there in 1976 when he entered politics.
Mr Goh announced his intention at the Marine Parade National Day dinner tonight (Aug 14).
He revealed that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had hoped that he would "carry on", even though he had contemplated retirement. "(PM Lee) wants me to carry on. He wants me to help in the leadership transition to the fourth generation team as an elder," he said.
The Workers' Party had said that it intends to contest the five-member group representation constituency in the next election.
