SINGAPORE - He was an assistant pastor and a married father of three who was entrusted with organising church activities for youth.
On Friday, the 46-year-old was jailed for 16 months for getting a 15-year-old church member to perform oral sex on him twice two years ago, with one of the incidents taking place in church.
Calling for a stiff sentence, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Yiwen said it was not just for the trust he abused, and for treating a girl some 30 years younger than him as a sexual plaything in a "contemptible and shocking" manner, but also for the devastating impact the acts had on the girl and her family.
Now 17, the victim said in a statement that she suffered nightmares and mood swings for months, and would become anxious when she sees someone who resembles the accused.
Her dad also gave a heartrending statement, describing how his marriage has been affected since it was his wife who introduced their daughter to the church.
"The victim's mother has since left the family. Even counselling has failed to bring the family back together. More tragically, the victim also blames her parents for not doing enough to protect her," said DPP Ng.
It was in 2011, after an overseas mission trip which included the victim and her mother, that the assistant pastor became close to the girl. They sent messages to each other via the phone, e-mail and social media sites, addressing each other by code names.
Their conversations soon became more sexual. He said he loved her, and intimated a few times that he would like them to have sex.
