The Oh family proved they were the savviest Harvey Norman shoppers on Saturday (Sept 30), negotiating the largest savings to emerge champion in the Harvey Norman Parkway Parade Superstore Shopping Spree.
Marine scheduler Kenny Oh, 36, along with his wife Tham Shin Mun, 32, brother Jet Oh, 18, and mother Chia Kim Muay, 58, grabbed 11 items worth over $7,000 at Harvey Norman's newest superstore in Parkway Parade.
It's no small sum, but price reductions of more than $4,000 meant their 'purchases' came up to $2,953.50 - not bad for one afternoon, or half an hour, in fact.
Three groups of contestants, made up of families of four, were given 30 minutes to grab items they liked, up to a price ceiling of $3,000.
The goal? To achieve the highest savings tallied after Harvey Norman's price reductions, in a competition that rewards winners who are able to seek out the best bargains at the retail store.
The Oh family's total savings of 57.98 per cent meant they beat out two other families to walk away with all the prizes in their basket - which included big-ticket items like a sofa set and washing machine.
The team of four didn't expect to win as the other two families seemed quite formidable, said Kenny, who appeared slightly defeated after the time was up.
But the Ohs had done their homework. To get a headstart, the team visited the store the day before to familiarise themselves with the various sections which are spread over two floors. Their hard work eventually paid off.
Unable to contain his joy, polytechnic student Jet was gushing over the fact that he was finally getting his own TV in his bedroom.
His sister-in-law Tham said she finally got a new Electrolux washing machine to replace their aging one. However, some sacrifices had to be made as she was initially eyeing an 8kg-load washer, but had to give it up as it wasn't on discount.
And believe it or not, the administrative assistant also got her first hair dryer, a Braun.
The family, who recently moved into their four-room flat in Yishun, is also pleased to be spending family time on a new two-piece quality sofa set from Europe.
But the other two families didn't go home empty-handed, as they were each given a $200 shopping voucher.
Although she didn't manage to win, 39-year-old homemaker Jamie Ratnam, who took part with her three young kids, plans to use the voucher to offset the cost of a new laptop she had been eyeing.
F&B training manager Mohammed Isa, 40, who entered the competition with his three teenaged children, said although the loss was slightly disappointing, but it made for great bonding time for the family.
And at the end of it all, "it was fun!", exclaimed Ratnam's kids, eight-year-old Kevin Constantine and seven-year-old Jeremy "Junior".
COMPLETE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
Aiming to be a one-stop shopping experience for all members of a family, the superstore houses all its four departments - electrical, IT, furniture and bedding.
Level 1 at Parkway is its new retail space that offers top quality furniture from Europe, plush beddings apart from homeware, audio visual items, cameras, computers, and a games hub that is attracting the young. There are also health and fitness equipment and a photo centre.
The level 2 unit, which was revamped, now houses its home and kitchen appliances.
With this competition, the superstore hopes to drive home the message that a family could still afford an array of household items under a budget of $3,000, if they take advantage of the tremendous deals that we offer regularly.
Said Eloise Sim, General Manager, Marketing Communications: "We are very happy with the enthusiasm shown by the families that participated today, and I saw that all three families enjoyed themselves, discovering what the store has to offer. We have a host of promotional activities coming up, including our anniversary celebrations from November onwards, so customers can be prepared for tremendous savings."
