Fast - and fun - way for foreign maids to network

SINGAPORE - More than 60 foreign domestic workers gathered on Sunday afternoon to mingle and network with their peers and volunteer befrienders.

The gathering was part of the Foreign Domestic Worker Association for Social Support and Training's (Fast) objective to improve their quality of life. Fast will be holding such gatherings every fortnight at a multi-purpose hall in Raeburn Park. There are also plans to make it a weekly affair.

Ms Ambarwati, 31, who goes by one name, said: "I have been looking for somewhere to go - a place where I can make new friends, do something fun and share my problems." The Indonesian has been working here as a maid for 14 years.

Fast also gave participants tickets to a screening of the award-winning Cannes movie, Ilo Ilo, about a Filipino maid working in a middle- class Chinese home.

There are still more than 230 tickets set aside for maids for this Sunday's screening at Golden Village, Plaza Singapura. Call the toll-free number 1800-339-4357 by Friday for details.
