Father gets jail, cane for sexually assaulting 12-year-old daughter

She was too shocked and afraid to say "stop".

After all, the man who had given her a massage when she complained of body ache, was her father.

The 12-year-old girl did not object when told to undress in the master bedroom.

As she lay face down on the bed in the family's three-room HDB flat, her father applied some cream to her back and legs and began massaging her - squeezing her breasts, and later sexually violating her with his finger several times.

Yesterday, the 47-year-old father of four was jailed a total of 13 years and given 12 strokes of the cane for the incident which happened in 2012.

The man, who cannot be named so as to protect the identity of the girl, originally faced three charges.

The prosecution proceeded with two - one for sexually violating the girl with his finger and another for committing an obscene act.

Nevertheless, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Joshua Lim had asked Justice Tay Yong Kwang for a stiff sentence, citing several aggravating factors against the ex-deliveryman.

He had sexually exploited a young girl, betrayed a position of trust, committed another sexual offence and had even tried to prevent the victim from cooperating with the authorities.

Said DPP Lim: "His duty was to protect, provide and look after (his) daughter. Instead, he abused his position and breached the trust and authority that was bestowed on him as a father."

Within a year of committing the first offence in 2012, the sole breadwinner committed an obscene act on his daughter on Feb 26, 2013.

The girl had woken up at 2am intending to make fried rice for school.

But she changed her mind after the alarm clock sounded.

While trying to fall sleep, she felt her father's hand touching and rubbing her private parts.

The man had been sleeping beside her in the room where her youngest sister and mother slept.

Feeling troubled, the girl told a social worker at her school what her father had done to her that morning.

The social worker discovered that between 2012 and 2013, the man had sexually assaulted the girl at home whenever her mother was away in Malacca, Malaysia.

The first time she was assaulted, the victim kept it a secret because she thought nobody would believe her. But she decided to report her father after the Feb 26 assault.

This was because she was also worried he would start to sexually abuse her younger sibling as she felt her sister was "prettier than her and would be reaching puberty soon", court documents revealed.

The man was arrested on Feb 27, 2013, after a police report was lodged and released on bail the next day.

He was charged on July 23 last year where he remained in custody.

The girl showed signs of psychological trauma.

According to a child guidance clinic report on March 21, 2013, she had "flashbacks and repetitive thoughts" of what her father did to her.

DPP Lim said: "She feels dirty and cuts herself when she is stressed and confused. The victim was worried...

"And was concerned that her paternal grandmother would hate her for disclosing the alleged matter."

Defence lawyer Amarjit Singh had asked for a lenient sentence to be imposed on his cooperative client who took full responsibility and was deeply remorseful.

His client's elderly mother, wife and four school-going children depended on him financially.

Said Mr Singh: "We are instructed that (he) has sought to be a good man, husband and father, and has repeatedly assured that this will be his first and only brush with the law."
