Fire at Jalan Besar grass patch

SINGAPORE - A restaurant helper thought it was strange to see smoke emerging from a roadside grass patch outside Jalan Besar Plaza, opposite his workplace.

The man, who declined to be named, said smoke was seen there on Sunday and Monday evening, and believes a passer-by called the police after being startled by it.

TNP reader Gary Haris first alerted us to the incident on Monday night after driving past the area and noticing a police line outside Jalan Besar Plaza.

He claimed to have seen sparks on the ground in the cordoned area.

When TNP arrived at the scene just after midnight, occasional rumblings could be heard underground and any signs of fire were quickly extinguished by firefighters at the scene.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force received the call at 10.31pm on Monday and dispatched a Red Rhino and a fire engine.

The fire died out before their arrival. Investigations are ongoing
