Fisherman shot dead over boat's fuel

KOTA KINABALU - An elderly fisherman was shot dead when he refused to hand over his boat's fuel to three men during a robbery at sea off the east coast Tawau district.

Wilson Ortis, 68, died of a bullet wound in the face during the 5pm incident in the waters off Inderasabah on Saturday.

Tawau district police deputy chief Supt Keong Ho Eng said Ortis had earlier gone out to sea with another fisherman.

"The two men were pulling in their nets when they were approached by the three men in another vessel," he said.

"They demanded fuel from the fishermen but Ortis refused," Supt Keong said.

"One of the men then pulled out a pistol and shot him point blank," he said, adding that the victim collapsed inside the boat.
