Five held for robbery and gang rape at Penang Bridge rest area

BUKIT MERTAJAM - Five men have been arrested over the robbery of a businessman at the Penang Bridge rest area and the gang rape of his friend from China.

The men, aged between 20 and 30, were picked up near the Bukit Merah rest area of the North South Expressway at 2am yesterday.

The suspects were in two cars when they were arrested and brought to a magistrate's court at 10.30am. The suspects were remanded for seven days.

In the 3am incident last Sunday, the 46-year-old businessman had stopped his vehicle at the rest area to use the toilet when four men rode up on two motorcycles.

One approached him on the pretext of asking for directions. While they were talking, the other three assaulted and robbed him.

Two men then sped off on their motorcycles while another two drove away with the woman still in the car.

In her police report, the woman said three of the men took turns to rape her before abandoning her at a petrol station in Sungai Dua.

Passers-by came to her rescue.
