Flat owner finds drugs worth $5.47 million

GEORGE TOWN - A house owner, who barged into a flat to collect three months of outstanding rental from his tenant, stumbled upon a huge stash of drugs, which the Penang police later said was their biggest drug haul this year.

Police, who rushed to the flat in Jelutong after they were alerted to the shocking find on Sunday night, detained the tenant who was believed to be a courier for overseas buyers.

Police seized 19kg of ecstasy powder, 58kg of methamphetamine in powder form and 15 litres of methamphetamine in liquid form.

The seized drugs are believed to have a street value of RM14.6mil (S$5.5 million).

"It is the largest drug haul for us this year," Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi told a press conference here yesterday.

He said checks with the Bukit Aman narcotics department showed the tenant, in his early 20s, was once arrested in Shenzhen, China, for a drug-related offence.

Meanwhile, in Bukit Mertajam, police seized a fake pistol along with 7.35gm of heroin, 0.3gm of methamphetamine and 1.3gm of ecstasy pills from four men believed to be triad members.

The four, aged 24 to 38, have been remanded until Nov 11.
