Football betting syndicate busted

Police have busted an illegal football betting syndicate and arrested eight men aged between 28 and 48.

An array of computers, laptops, mobile phones, documents such as betting records and S$190,000 cash were seized.

The suspects are believed to have received S$750,000 in bets in the past fortnight.

In a statement yesterday, police said officers conducted operations in Clementi West, Jelapang Road, Tampines, Bedok Central, Jalan Kembangan, Boon Tiong Road, Hougang, Upper Boon Keng Road and Jalan Chermat between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Investigations are ongoing.

Anyone convicted of betting with a bookmaker can be fined up to S$5,000, be jailed up to six months, or both.

Anyone found to be involved in bookmaking can be fined between S$20,000 and S$200,000 and also be jailed up to five years.
