Free laptops raise Tamil Nadu's computer literacy

Following the launch of a scheme in 2011 in Tamil Nadu, where students from class 11 onwards in government schools and college students are eligible for free laptops, the percentage of households having a member who can operate a computer has risen from 14.3 per cent in 2010 to 30.1 per cent in 2014.

More students are passing class 11 and are eligible to receive free laptops, while those who do not receive them in school can apply when they enter college.
