Getting ahead in tourism sector
Mr Mahathir Mohamed.

For Mr Mahathir Mohamed, 25, SDH Institute has been his second home for the past three years.

He completed his first Diploma in Hospitality Management in December 2010.

Two years later, he took an Advanced Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management, which offered him direct entry into the third year of the Bachelor's Degree in International Hotel Management, awarded by the prestigious Vatel International Business School.

After graduating from the Bachelor's Degree, he took up an Advanced Diploma in Events Management. The advanced diploma course consists of nine months in SDH Institute, after which the student goes for a six-month internship.

Mr Mahathir first joined SDH Institute after reading about them in the newspapers.

He said: "I was looking for a career path after national service, and the hospitality and tourism sector was growing as the integrated resorts were about to open.

"SDH Institute attracted me as I only needed six months to complete my first diploma, compared to a year or more at many other schools."

As part of a module in managing Business and Sports Events, Mr Mahathir and his classmates are organising an interschool futsal competition next month between different private education institutions at The Cage at Kallang. The proceeds will go to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

In June, Mr Mahathir was involved in a traffic accident and had to be hospitalised for a month. Despite this, the school allowed him to continue his studies, and even offered to record lectures for him to watch.
