Hawkers and coffee shops start to raise prices

GEORGE TOWN - Just one day into the new year, the price hikes have already begun.

Several hawkers have raised their prices in view of the escalating costs of ingredients and other relevant items.

Char koay teow seller Lim Teong Lean, 38, said he had to increase his prices as he could not afford to absorb the rising costs any more.

Each plate of char koay teow is now priced at RM3.50 (S$1.34) (normal), RM4 (S$1.50) (with egg) and RM4.50 (S$1.70) (with duck egg), an increase of 50 sen per plate from a week ago.

"One kilo of prawn now costs RM30 compared to RM18 in April. A bottle of soya sauce is also 50 sen higher since early last year, from RM5.50 to RM6," said Lim at the Cecil Street hawker centre yesterday

In Petaling Jaya, several coffee shops have also raised the prices of their drinks by up to 20 sen while hawkers have also hiked the prices of their food by about 50 sen.
