Helping Typhoon-hit Philippines: Singapore employers can play their part

Like Filipina Elvie Madahan ("Maid sends all she has to help affected family"; yesterday), many Singaporeans want to help the Filipinos working here whose families were affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan, by offering donations in cash or in kind.

Singapore employers who have affected Filipino employees could help by paying them a salary advance, so they can immediately send the money home.

To show compassion and gratitude for the Filipinos' contributions to our country, employers could also check on their former Filipino workers who were affected by the disaster, and offer help in whatever ways they deem fit.

My former maid told me she was very sad and worried as her house has been destroyed. Thankfully, her mother and siblings escaped just in time.

I am rallying my family members to help her.
