Historic Tanjong Pagar Railway Station to open on Hari Raya Puasa

SINGAPORE - The former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station will be open to the public from 9am to 6pm on Hari Raya Puasa on Wednesday (July 6).

Since it started welcoming visitors on public holidays in February last year, over 92,000 people have visited the station, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) said on Monday (July 4).

Members of the public are encouraged to take photos or sketch their impressions of the station, which was gazetted as a national monument in 2011.

They can deposit the drawings at the former ticketing counter, and stand a chance to have their work at future openings.

The SLA also revealed on Monday that the station's design was inspired by Finland's Helsinki Central Railway Station.

The four giant figures at the entrance of the station symbolised Industry, Agriculture, Commerce and Transport, which represented the sectors of Singapore's colonial economy, it added.

A popular venue for corporate and community events such as art exhibitions and pop-up restaurants, the station last month hosted an outdoor screening of Singapore-made films that attracted over 2,000 people.
