Ikea recalls safety gate due to fall hazard

SINGAPORE - Furniture manufacturer Ikea Singapore is recalling on Tuesday two pressure mounted safety gate models, Patrull Klamma and Patrull Smidig, due to a tripping hazard.

Ikea said it received reports where the friction between the wall and the pressure mounted safety gate has been insufficient to hold the gate in its intended position.

In addition, the lower metal bar could constitute to a tripping hazard.

Although the gates - which have been sold in Singapore since 2005 - are only meant to be used in a doorway between rooms or at the bottom of a staircase, it also poses a fall hazard if the gate is mounted at the top of a staircase, said Ikea. It advises customers not to mount the gate on top of staircases.

Customers who have a Patrull Klamma or Patrull Smidig safety gate are advised to approach the exchange and returns counters at either Ikea Tampines or Ikea Alexandra, or contact Ikea customer relations at +65 6786 6868 to receive updated user instructions and new adhesive warning labels to put on their safety gate.

These labels are free of charge.
