Indians in S'pore celebrate country's Republic Day

Around 600 Indian nationals and friends of India gathered at the High Commission of India's grounds in Grange Road on Jan 26 morning. High commissioner of India Vijay Thakur Singh hoisted the Indian flag, which was followed by India's national anthem.

The high commissioner then read out Indian president Pranab Mukherjee's address to the country.

This was followed by several cultural performances by Indian schoolchildren. The students came from the three campuses of Global Indian International School, NPS International School, DPS International School and DAV Hindi School.

In the evening on the same day, the High Commission hosted a reception at the Shangri-La hotel. At the reception, Singapore's Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew addressed those gathered and raised a toast to the Indian president. The Indian high commissioner also addressed the audience and raised a toast to the Singapore president. The national anthems of both countries were also rendered by a local group of singers.
