A foreigner claiming to be a monk has been arrested for allegedly raping a 40-year-old temple volunteer in Durian Tunggal here.
The 32-year-old from Cambodia allegedly raped the woman on three occasions - twice at the temple and once at her home in Tanjung Kling here.
The single mother of two also accused him of placing pieces of paper on several parts of her body and inserting his fingers into her private parts during a series of prayers and rituals to find her a life partner.
She claimed that although she tried to resist the man, she was overpowered.
The man also threatened to cast a jinx on her if she told anyone about the incidents.
However, after confiding in another volunteer, the woman finally lodged a report at the Batang Tiga police station on Tuesday.
The man was detained the same day.
State CID chief Senior Asst Comm Kamaluddin Kassim said the man claimed he was also an exorcist.
The case, he said, was being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.
"We are also checking if the man had used his position to sexually abuse other devotees," he added.
The woman, said ACP Kamaluddin, had been sent to the Malacca Hospital for medical examination.
Malacca Buddhist Youth Society founder and adviser Ronald Gan said he would check if the temple involved was registered.
"We will wait for police to complete their probe," he said, adding that there were previous cases in which foreigners impersonated monks and priests.
"They prey on the gullible who believe in superstition to get rich or cure illnesses."
