International school big on solar power

An international school has installed a 1-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar panel system on its roof - making it one of the largest single-site solar installations in Singapore.

The solar photovoltaic system at the Singapore American School in Woodlands, which harnesses the sun's energy for electricity, spans 6,000 sq m of roof space. It will meet about 10 per cent of the school's energy needs.

The school will also use the system to teach its 3,800 students about renewable energy, climate change, sustainable engineering and other topics.

United States Ambassador to Singapore Kirk Wagar, Sembawang GRC MP Ong Teng Koon and Economic Development Board cleantech director Goh Chee Kiong attended the launch of the school's solar panel system yesterday.

Singapore American School superintendent Chip Kimball said: "The solar project is not just a bold statement on sustainability; it's a testament to our commitment to prepare our students for the future."

The only other single-site 1-MWp solar panel system in Singapore is at the Keppel Seghers Ulu Pandan Newater Plant.

Other solar panel systems are in the pipeline.

Supermarket giant Sheng Siong will soon install a 1.2-MWp system on its distribution centre in Mandai, while the Housing Board has placed panels on HDB rooftops in several estates.
