Jailed 2 years for sex with 14-year-old girl

A delivery driver who had underage sex with a female student shortly after they came to know each other on Facebook was jailed for 24 months yesterday.

Eugene Prem Kumar, 30, pleaded guilty to three counts of having sex with the 14-year-old girl sometime between September and October 2010 at his flat in Yishun Avenue 5. Two other similar charges were taken into consideration.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Lim Yu Hui said Kumar, then 27, came to know the victim via Facebook sometime in September 2010. She told him she was 14 while he gave his age as 21 to 22.

They met a week later. He asked her to be his girlfriend and she agreed. Soon after, he asked the victim to go to his flat in Yishun and initiated sex with her. She refused but later gave in to his request for oral sex.

On another occasion, when he asked her to his flat, she brought a friend along, thinking he would not ask her for sex. But he did and she succumbed. The offences came to light when the victim told a social worker at Gracehaven Home and was advised to make a police report in 2012.

Seeking a jail sentence of 12 to 15 months, Ms Lim told District Judge Christopher Goh that Kumar was persistent in his request, and the episodes occurred very shortly after they entered into a relationship. She also said he was twice the victim's age and had unprotected sex with her.

Kumar, who has since married and has a one-year-old daughter, could have been jailed for up to 10 years and/or fined on each charge.
