Jailed 7 months for renting out flat

A woman has been jailed for seven months for renting out her flat to a Bangladesh national who was staying in Singapore illegally.

Mariam Abdullah, 50, had been told by the Bangladeshi, 23, that he was a work permit holder. He paid $250 monthly to stay at her flat.

She did not check with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority or the Ministry of Manpower before renting her unit to him.

The immigration offender was sentenced to 10 weeks' jail and five strokes of the cane on Oct 24.
