KEPALA BATAS - Police seized 363 packets of ketum juice worth RM5,000 (S$1,851) and nabbed 37 men in a two-day operation.
Ops Tapis Khas also saw police identifying three premises which had been producing ketum juice for about two weeks.
North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said the operation, aimed at stopping the production of ketum juice, involved several raids at three areas from Tuesday.
Much of the illegal substance was meant for sale to fishermen or odd-job workers here, he added.
He said the first raid, led by Insp Mazlan Abu Bakar at 12.20pm on Tuesday, saw 13 packets of ketum juice seized and a 33-year-old man arrested at a premises in Telok Air Tawar in Butterworth.
"Insp Anastsya Abd Ghaffar led the second raid at 5pm on the same day when two men, aged 38 and 51, were arrested.
"Police found another premises producing ketum juice in Kuala Muda, Kepala Batas," he said at a news conference at the district police headquarters here yesterday.
ACP Abdul Rahman said 350 packets of ketum juice and equipment used to make the illegal substance, including two gas tanks, cookware and measuring tools, were seized in the second raid.
"In another raid, police arrested three men, who had been involved in drug cases.
"Another four men who had been involved in drug cases were also detained," he said.
ACP Abdul Rahman added that Insp Mazlan led another raid in Kuala Muda at 6am yesterday, which saw 27 men, aged between 20 and 50, being arrested.
The men were believed to be drinking ketum juice when they were nabbed.
"Two of the suspects were involved in a RM30,000 robbery on May 13," he said.
