Kopitiam sacks employee who washed shoes in sink

SINGAPORE - An employee of Kopitiam has been sacked for washing her shoes in a sink at a food court in the National University Hospital (NUH).

Kopitiam, which runs a chain of food courts here, apologised for the incident in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

"With regard to the incident in our food court located at NUH, we would like to apologize for this unpleasant encounter. Please be assured that we take this matter seriously," the post read.

"The staff in question has been terminated with immediate effect and we will be conducting a thorough investigation into this matter."

The apology comes after a video of a woman washing her shoes in a sink had gone viral on Facebook.

The video, posted by Facebook user Queenie Here, shows a Kopitiam staff scrubbing both her shoes with a brush under a tap of running water within the cold desserts section of the food court. She then appeared to return the brush she had used to a container which held other kitchen utensils.

As of 2pm on Tuesday, the 2-minute clip had over 360,000 views and close to 19,000 shares.

Kopitiam said that all washing equipment has been replaced and the sink has been disinfected.
