Lack of progress on through-train idea

Lack of progress on through-train idea

I am quite surprised that there has not been much traction since MP Denise Phua proposed having a cluster of schools with no streaming and with 10 years of through-train education without the Primary School Leaving Examination ("Denise Phua proposes new education model"; Jan 22).

Our education system is very competitive and the Ministry of Education may want to consider introducing this pilot programme to several "average" neighbourhood schools to gauge the response.

Parents who feel strongly that the PSLE is too stressful for their children can take up this option without affecting the majority.

The ministry should not introduce the programme to "popular" primary schools as it will make Primary 1 registration even more competitive at these schools.

This proposal would certainly add vibrancy to our education system as it caters to the different needs of children. If it is well received, the ministry can introduce it to more schools.
