Little India riot: Accident victim fell after getting off bus

Police revealed on Tuesday the circumstances leading up to the death of Mr Sakthivel Kumaravelu, 33, which sparked the riot in Little India on Sunday night.

After Mr Sakthivel disembarked, he was seen walking and running after the bus in an unsteady manner.

He then stumbled, tripped and fell into the path of the rear tyre of the bus and was run over, the statement said.

The driver of the bus was arrested on Monday for causing death by a negligent act.

He is currently assisting the police with investigations into the accident and has been released on bail.

Police have stepped up patrols in Little India to increase their visibility.

Close-circuit television cameras will also be installed in the vicinity of Race Course Road, and this will be completed by next week.

The police are now looking at their operational plans for the weekend and will announce more details over the next couple of days, a spokesman said.
