Little India riot: Bloody row on curry row

Rioters caused carnage along Race Course Road, well-known for its Indian curry restaurants, on Sunday night.

16 police vehicles

9 SCDF vehicles

comprising 3 ambulances, 1 Red Rhino, 1 fire engine and 4 support vehicles. Of these, 1 ambulance, 1 police motorcycle and 3 police vehicles were set on fire.

The crowd disperses from Race Course Road. Some rioters continue to cause trouble. TNP reporter Zaihan Mohd Yusof saw rioters throwing projectiles at Norris Rd just after midnight.


A private bus at Tekka Lane picks up workers to send them to dormitories in Jalan Papan, Jurong. It is full when Mr Sakthivel Kumaravelu, 33, attempts to board.

Believed to be drunk, the Indian national begins to cause trouble and at one point drops his trousers. The driver calls for assistance from bus coordinator Wong Geck Woon, who manages to get the Indian national off the bus.

The driver closes the door and drives off. Hearing a loud bang, he stops the bus.


Police get a call about a traffic accident, which requires an ambulance.

A crowd gathers at the scene.


First respondents (two policemen) arrive. The crowd of about 100 people is angry, but not violent.

In the next 20 minutes, police and SCDF vehicles arrive. The crowd begins to turn violent.
