Maid in hospital after fire breaks out in flat

A 10TH-FLOOR blaze at a Housing Board flat in Serangoon North left a maid in hospital yesterday.

The fire broke out at a unit in Block 506, Serangoon North Avenue 4, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted just before 1.30pm. It took 10 minutes to put out the flames.

Neighbour Mary Heng told The Straits Times that she first thought someone was burning incense when she caught a whiff of smoke - then realised the flat next door was on fire when she heard the maid there crying.

"I ran at once," the 60-year-old housewife said in Mandarin.

The maid, a Myanmar national who was alone in the flat at the time, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treating smoke inhalation.

Said the flat owner, Mrs Gina Ong, an interior designer in her early 30s: "We're very upset. Everything we've worked for is gone." The SCDF is investigating the cause of the fire.
