Malaysia cops destroy over 2,000 computers used for illegal online gambling

KUALA LUMPUR - Ampang Jaya police have destroyed 2,057 computers which have been used for illegal online gambling.

OCPD Asst Comm Khairuldin Saat said the computers were connected to 158 cases.

"In 2012, we conducted 794 raids and arrested 218 people involved in illegal online gambling outlets.

"The following year, we conducted 1,440 raids and arrested 167 people," he told reporters at the Pandan Indah police station yesterday.

He said police seized 1,957 computers in 2012 and 1,782 in 2013.

He said the illegal online gambling outlets used various ways to avoid detection.

"Most of them had set up cyber cafes as a front for their illicit activities," he added.

As for this year, ACP Khairuldin said no cases have been reported thus far.

The police, he added, were closely monitoring the situation and would act on any information given.
