KUALA LUMPUR - Bukit Aman is on the hunt for five people identified as online hate-mongers on social media sites.
The wanted culprits include a woman with the Facebook profile Vignamona VM, who called for religious schools to be disbanded, a man (FB profile Kelvin Yip), who allegedly insulted Islam over the Muslims' call to prayer (azan), and a man depicted on YouTube kicking another man of a different race.
The other two are a man whose profile name is "Persatuan Kongsi Gelap Melayu", responsible for posting provocative messages regarding an alleged racial riot in Klang, and Facebook user Mohd Adam Asyiq Balasubramaniam, who posted racial sentiments.
Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the police were going all out to track down those responsible for spreading racial and religious hate.
"We have received several police reports regarding the five culprits.
"We are tracking them down ... we hope the public can assist with any useful information," he said at a press conference in Bukit Aman here yesterday.
Dismissing allegations that the cops practised selective investigation, Comm Mohmad said three people who spread racial and religious slurs had been rounded up in the past two weeks.
"The three are religious preacher Shahul Hamid (insulted Hinduism), Smallfiled Benjamin (insulted Islam by making fun of the fasting month and Hari Raya) and Ringgo Pandan (spread false news that a group of Muslim students were slashed by a group of Indians in Pandamaran, Klang)," he said.
"We are experiencing difficulties in finding out the real identities of the online culprits as some IP addresses were registered overseas, but we are working tirelessly to bring them to justice."
On July 31, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin called for Yip to be charged and for the authorities to act strictly.
Yip has since deleted the allegedly offensive post and apologised for it.
Selangor Umno Youth chief Zainuri Zainal urged Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail to probe Yip's case in the way he did the issue concerning wedding planner Fairrah Ashykin Kamaruddin, or Kiki, who was filmed shouting abuses at an elderly man after a minor accident.
Last week, MIC staged a protest against a video clip that allegedly showed dakwah preacher Shahul Hamid Seeni Muhammad insulting the Hindu religion at a ceramah in a Shah Alam surau five years ago.
He made a public apology over the matter on July 31.
