Malaysian farmer gets the death sentence - and he smiles
Fauzi being led out of the court after he was sentenced to death for drug trafficking.

ALOR SETAR - A 27-year-old farmer managed to smile despite being sentenced to death by the High Court here for trafficking in 1.9kg of cannabis.

Fauzi Naim Muhamad Zaki from Taiping appeared calm as the sentence was read out but he managed to smile as he was led out of the dock yesterday.

He was caught with the cannabis on March 14, 2012, at a coffeeshop in Lunas, Kulim.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab, in his judgment, said the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

"Fauzi claimed the drug found in his motorcycle basket belonged to his friend. After considering his statement of defence, I find that the accused's statement cannot be trusted and failed to raise a doubt."

Defence counsel Muhamad Asri Abdul Hamid said Fauzi only earned an income of about RM700 (S$270) and this was his first offence.

DPP Salim Soib prosecuted.
