A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing around $450 from a Grab driver on Thursday (Aug 3).

The incident was caught on video on July 23 and the video clip went viral this week after it was circulated online.

In the clip, the man was seen reaching for the driver's wallet while he was not looking, and taking cash out of it before putting it in his own pocket.

Netizens have slammed the man for taking the hard-earned money the driver had made over three days.

Officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the suspect through extensive enquiries and the aid of images from CCTV and arrested him yesterday, said the police in a media statement.

Police investigations are ongoing.

If convicted of theft, the suspect will be fined or jailed for three years or both.

The police also advised taxi and private-hire car drivers to take the following precautionary measures:

  • Do not put personal valuables (including mobile phones) at or near the vehicle' centre consoles or places within the easy reach of passengers.
  • Be vigilant in safeguarding your personal valuables and be wary of anyone who may try to distract you.
