A man has been arrested for committing an obscene act on a bus heading towards Bukit Batok bus interchange on March 31.
The man was arrested with the assistance of a 17-year-old female victim and the bus captain. The victim had notified the bus captain to detain the man and call for police.
According to a statement, the police received a call at 6pm from an SMRT staff stationed at the interchange. The staff told the police that a man had committed an obscene act on SMRT bus 106.
Police officers from Jurong Police Division and the Public Transport Security Command responded to the incident and arrested the male suspect.
Investigation against the male suspect is ongoing. Anyone found guilty of doing any obscene act in any public place is liable to a fine and/or imprisonment of up to three months.
Commander of Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Wilson Lim, commended the victim for retaining her composure and reporting the case, despite the shock of confronting the subject in his lewd act.
He also expressed his appreciation to the actions of the bus captain, who together with the victim, identified the subject and detained him until the arrival of the police officers.
He added that the police will take firm action against persons responsible for such acts, to ensure the safety of commuters on Singapore's public transport network.
