Man admits spitting at bus interchange, but claims it was only once

SINGAPORE - The odd-job worker accused of spitting at two women at a bus interchange has admitted to spitting at one woman once, but is claiming trial to the other five of the six charges he faces.

Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that 48-year-old Juraimi Kamaludin admitted to the judge that he spat once at Ms Lee Kuan Eng, 34, but claimed that he is innocent of the other accusations.

Juraimi is alleged to have spat several times in the face of Ms Lee and in the face of Ms Teoh Lay Peng, 41, at Woodlands Regional Interchange on Oct 22. The incident was caught on video.

He was charged in October for the alleged offences, and for behaving aggressively to cause annoyance and danger to the public and other passengers on bus service 950.

He was also accused of behaving in a disorderly manner at a void deck in Bukit Batok on Sept 8.

In early December, two fresh charges were brought against him. One states that Juraimi had spat at Ms Lee again about 20 minutes after the earlier alleged spitting incident.

The other charge states that he allegedly committed a rash act by pushing Ms Teoh out of the bus at about 9.30pm that day.

Juraimi told the court yesterday that he committed the offence because one of the women insulted his mother, Lianhe Wanbao reported. However, other than spitting at Ms Lee once, he said he did not otherwise harm the two women.

Juraimi is out on $10,000 bail.

If convicted of using criminal force, he could be jailed for up to three months, fined up to $1,500 or both.

The spitting charges fall under this section.

The maximum penalty for committing a rash act is six months' jail and a $2,500 fine.
