Man carrying contraband cigarettes arrested for bribe attempt on police officers

SINGAPORE - A 29-year-old man was arrested for attempting to bribe two police officers who detained him for possession of contraband cigarettes.

On Sep 9, 2014 at about 11.23pm, Sergeant Lim Kok Beng and Special Constable (SC) Sergeant Mohammed Sufyan Bin Abu Bakar from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division were patrolling along Sembawang Drive when they spotted the man behaving suspiciously.

During the spot check, he was found to be in possession of one packet of contraband cigarettes. When the officers informed him that summons action would be taken against him for the possession of contraband cigarettes, he offered $200 to the two officers for them to let him go.

The bribery attempt was flatly rejected by the officers and he was placed under arrest for attempting to bribe the police officers.

The Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau (CPIB) is investigating the man for attempting to bribe the police officers. He will also be investigated by Singapore Customs for possession of contraband cigarettes.
