Man charged in child begging case

IN A rare charge involving a seemingly rare occurrence in Singapore, a 35-year-old man was hauled before a court for allegedly instructing a nine-year-old girl under his care to beg for money in Woodlands.

James Raj David Jelvaras is accused of two counts of asking the child to beg at a multi-storey carpark at Block 516, Woodlands Drive 14, on Dec 30 and at Block 515 in the same street on April 26.

No plea was taken.

The child cannot be named as there is a gag order.

Bail of $5,000 was offered.

If convicted under the Children and Young Persons Act, the accused faces a fine of up to $2,000 and/or a jail term of up to 12 months.
