Man charged with murder over fatal assault at Brunei university

An Indian man was ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation after he was charged yesterday with murder of a man and attempted murder of another colleague at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) last week.

The court document submitted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Hjh Rozaimah Hj Abd Rahman states that Sekar Appavu, 45, is accused of committing murder by intentionally causing the death of Rajendran Kumarasami, who is also aged 45.

The crime allegedly took place in the vicinity of UBD Green House on Dec 20.

It went on to state that on the same day, Sekar is accused of attempting to murder Pazhanivelu Sivalinkam, 40, with a one metre-long wooden stick.

It was previously reported that police caught Appavu in the forested area behind UBD's Chancellor Hall after a two-day manhunt.

During the proceedings before Chief Magistrate Muhammed Faisal PDJLD DSP Hj Kefli yesterday, no pleas were taken from Appavu on the murder charge that carries the death sentence and up to life imprisonment for the attempted murder charge.

The court adjourned the case for two weeks for further investigation and the defendant to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Appavu has been ordered to be further remanded at Jerudong Prison pending the next mention of the case on January 7, 2015.
