Man charged with raping girl aged 12

A man was charged in court yesterday with raping a 12-year-old girl and sexual grooming of the minor.

Lee Seow Peng, 38, is alleged to have raped the girl at a public carpark at the Chinese Gardens in Jurong sometime on May 29, 2012.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

The second charge accuses him of sexual grooming by having communicated with the girl on at least two occasions before the alleged statutory rape.

He is said to have met the girl, whom he did not reasonably believe was 16 or above at the time.

He is accused in a third charge of trying to procure an indecent act by a female child by sending text and WhatsApp messages to her mobile phone, asking her to meet him for sex.

If convicted of the sexual grooming charge, he could be jailed for up to three years and/or fined.

The last charge carries a maximum punishment of $10,000 fine and five years' jail.

Bail of $60,000 was offered.

He will appear in court again on Nov 11.
