K. Saravanan, 26, and his friend Ahamad Mohd Latif, 23, were charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday with slashing Saravanan's wife D. Megala, 24, repeatedly with machetes.

Both men were denied bail by Judge Kamarudin Kamsun.

They were charged with another person still at large. If convicted they can be jailed up to 20 years.

They are accused of attacking Megala with machetes outside a row of houses in Taman PD Utama here at 6.40pm on Oct 1.

The accused, who were unrepresented, were arrested several hours after the incident.

DPP Syamimi Farhana Muhammad A. Aziz had asked the court not to allow bail due to the seriousness of the case.

"The accused should be kept away from the victim at all costs as we do not want to jeopardise investigations," she said, adding that the case was also of public interest.

Earlier when pleading for bail, Saravanan, who works in a hotel, promised the court that he would not go near his wife.

He said he also had to provide for his parents and did not have any criminal record.

Labourer Ahamad also promised not to go near the victim.

He claimed that he was also providing for his parents and his father was employed.

Kamarudin fixed Nov 13 for the case to be mentioned again pending a medical report.

In the minute-long video clip, two men in face masks were seen attacking a woman. The suspects escaped in a car driven by an accomplice.

The victim is being treated at Port Dickson Hospital.
