A MAN could face up to 10 years in jail and an unspecified number of whippings after he pleaded guilty to outraging the modesty of his 12-year-old niece.
The court document submitted by prosecuting officer Siti Nurjauinah Hj Kula stated that the 30-year-old defendant entered Miss X's room through a bathroom window to commit theft around 3am on February 1.
The defendant, whose identity is withheld to protect the victim, is a married man living with his wife's family in Gadong since 2010.
Once he was inside the room, he saw Miss X sleeping alone and approached her.
Miss X then woke up and panicked when she saw the defendant in the room.
Seeing this, the defendant covered Miss X's mouth with his hand and told her to be quiet.
The defendant then groped Miss X.
The victim struggled but the defendant had told her not to make any noise.
Miss X only told her parents about the incident the morning of February 1.
The defendant was arrested after a police report was lodged.
The defendant admitted that he had groped Miss X.
During the proceedings before Intermediate Court Judge Pg Hjh Hanani Pg Hj Metussain, the defendant sought a lenient sentence and wished to change himself for the sake of his family.
He asked the court to give him another chance to become a better person and a better husband.
The defendant, who has no children and has been married for one year, has been further remanded pending the sentencing.
