Man remanded over beating to death of phone thief

BUKIT MERTAJAM - A man who allegedly joined several others to bash up a handphone thief to death was remanded for a week.

The remand order was granted by magistrate Nurzafirah Mohamed Ali yesterday to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Rusli Mohd Noor said the 23-year-old suspect had turned himself in at the Central Seberang Prai district police headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam on Wednesday.

It was reported that the jobless victim, identified as Ooi Sim Guan, 38, had died at the Seberang Jaya Hospital three days after he was attacked by passers-by on Sept 26. The 23-year-old suspect was one of the passers-by.

Prior to the incident, the victim had stopped a lorry at Taman Sejahtera in Alma to hitch a ride and was dropped off a kilometre away later.

An argument soon ensued between the lorry driver and Ooi when the driver suspected the latter of stealing his handphone which was placed at the vehicle's dashboard. The lorry driver turned back his vehicle to look for Ooi.

Several passers-by got involved and attacked Ooi during the argument.. The lorry driver, too, had been detained and his remand expires tomorrow.
