Man stabs girlfriend with scissors

This time, no gang members were involved.

There were no parangs involved and no staring incident.

But the violence was no less senseless. An apparent lover's tiff degenerated into a shouting match and involved a pair of bloodied scissors.

It happened at a common area next to Block 142, Pasir Ris Street 11, on Saturday night.

A resident, who wanted to be known only as Madam Lim, remembers the incident, which happened at about 10.30pm.

Said the housewife, who is in her late 50s: "I was about to go to sleep when I heard an argument coming from the common area behind Block 142.

"There was a loud scream. I looked out my window to see what the commotion was all about and saw a group of people crowding around a young couple."

As curious passers-by and residents rushed to the common area, they found a young man in his 20s staring at his girlfriend, who was bleeding from a stab wound.

Residents said they were unclear what the couple had fought about.

VICTIM

But they recognised the victim, also in her 20s, as somebody who lives in the neighbourhood.

Added Madam Lim: "Some people ran over to help the girl, who was conscious even though she was bleeding profusely.

"One neighbour later told me there were a pair of bloodied scissors and bloodstains on the floor."

"The boyfriend didn't run away and was detained by the police later," she added.

Police told The New Paper that the woman was still conscious when she was rushed to Changi General Hospital.

"A police spokesman said that a man in his 20s was arrested.

In May, the Association of Women for Action and Research launched a three-year campaign to raise awareness for victims of domestic abuse.

Called We Can!, it aims to get people to look out for those who show signs of abuse, such as being withdrawn or physical injury, and equip them with knowledge and resources to help victims.

The campaign is also part of a global initiative to get individuals to pledge that they will not tolerate violence against women.
