MOE to tackle issue of sexual misconduct

The Ministry of Education (MOE) will work with schools to tackle the issue of teachers misbehaving sexually with students.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat told parliament yesterday that MOE will "systematically go through the past cases of such incidents to identify the areas of weakness and to draw relevant lessons".

He was responding to a question from Mr Lim Biow Chuan (Mountbatten) on the ministry's plans to protect students from sexual predators.

"We are deeply disappointed with the cases of misconduct that have happened," Mr Heng said. "Whenever we uncover any case of sexual misconduct between educators and students, they will be thoroughly investigated and the transgressors will be severely dealt with."

He said MOE would study Mr Lim's suggestion of a buddy system for teachers.
